Northlands Bowling Club unveils upgraded ‘A Green’

The new A Green was officially unveiled at a grand opening last Saturday, featuring a fun bowls session, a competitive drawn trips competition, a prize-giving, and an evening dinner.

NORTHLANDS Bowling Club in Durban North has rolled out a major revamp of its historic ‘A Green’, a project that vice-chairman Nando Menin said reflects the energy and growth of the club in recent years.

“Our membership has grown significantly, bringing fresh enthusiasm to the club. We wanted our facilities to match that spirit, and the new A Green now stands alongside the finest bowling greens in the country,” said Menin.

The green, named after beloved member Charlie Krog, was first opened in August, 1948.

The upgrade, dubbed Project A Green, included reinforcing the grass bank edges, installing a water-saving automated irrigation system, and laying brick paving around high-traffic areas.

Planning and fundraising began around six months ago, followed by a two-month construction phase during which the green was out of action.

The project was spearheaded by members Eamonn Kriedemann and Dave Paterson, whose engineering expertise helped maintain the integrity of the grass surface throughout the work.

The renovations were made possible through the generosity of club members, who supported a range of fundraising initiatives. Special credit also goes to the club’s gardening team, particularly the women who maintain the grounds in immaculate condition.

The upgrades come as the club prepares for its 80th anniversary next year.

From its beginnings with just 20 members in 1946, Northlands Bowling Club has grown into a thriving community hub, offering competitive and social bowls, fitness classes, theatre performances, and popular community events such as bingo and bridge.

While many clubs are struggling to attract members, Menin said Northlands is bucking the trend.

“We’re expanding and investing in our future to create a vibrant, welcoming environment for all. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, there’s a place for you here.”

The club is looking forward to celebrating its 80th anniversary next year.
