Concern over reckless driving on Chris Hani Road
The ward councillor for the area says traffic lights are mere suggestions for some motorists who speed through intersections.
ACCIDENTS in recent weeks, including last week’s fatal crash on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road), have again prompted residents and members of the community to call for speed calming measures on the busy road.
Two people, one of whom was a pedestrian, were killed in last week’s incident involving a taxi and two vehicles at the corner of Effingham Road and Chris Hani Road.
A total of 15 people were also injured in that accident, according to paramedics on scene.
However, several other intersections remain a concern, including the Victor Road / Chris Hani Road, and Malacca Road / Chris Hani Road intersections.

Residents have called on the eThekwini Municipality to consider reinstating traffic cameras along Chris Hani Road to stop motorists who speed and those who drive through red traffic lights.
Resident and businessman in the area, Neil Ramdin, said he doesn’t feel safe parking his vehicle at the building he manages because of the number of accidents.
“We’ve had fatalities, crashes and destruction to property at the Victor Road intersection alone. What is deeply concerning is there is a bus stop for learners from local schools near the intersection and they are also at risk,” he explained.
Ward 34 councillor Andrew Akkers said he too had been contacted by residents on the issue of speeding and reckless driving on Chris Hani Road.

“It is the entirety of Chris Hani Road where speeding is a daily occurrence. Every traffic light is just a suggestion. I do agree with residents who are accessing the road from side roads at the intersections. Even if you have the right of way you have to look several times before taking off. I’ve had several residents request that speed cameras be reinstated as a way to fight back.
“There is also a need for more Metro Police enforcement. Following last week’s fatal accident there was a presence from Metro Police at that particular intersection. We feel that, coupled with the reinstatement of speed cameras, are the best way to deal with the matter. When reckless driving ends up costing the motorists because they have to pay fines, driver behaviour would change. There are some vehicles going close to 120km/h on Chris Hani Road and that is scary,” he said.
