26 drivers arrested for drunk driving in uMhlanga

Twenty-six drivers were arrested for drunk driving in uMhlanga during a major weekend roadblock

DURBAN North SAPS has confirmed that  26 drivers were arrested on Saturday (November 1) at a roadblock in uMhlanga near Lighthouse Road.

The operation involved officers from the station, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), and the KZN Department of Transport.

For months, residents in uMhlanga have raised concerns over what they refer to as the ‘lawlessness’ in the area, including reckless driving.

This also led to a meeting with eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba  who pledged to ensure increased police visibility and enforcement of by-laws in the area.

The arrests were welcomed by Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh.

“We need more of these operations to ensure public safety; we also want the police to arrest those who continue to do burnouts on the streets of uMhlanga. The plan going forward is to make sure we have law and order to protect tourists and residents,” Singh said.

Meanwhile MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said two major operations on KZN roads this weekend led to the arrest of 110 people for drunk driving.

“A total of 84 motorists were arrested in Empangeni this weekend. 26 were arrested [in uMhlanga] on their way to cause horrific accidents. The no-nonsense team from Road Traffic Inspectorate was very firm,”  Duma said.
