357 arrested for drunk driving across Durban in 3 days
Durban’s Metro police confirmed joint operations would continue and warned any law-breaking drivers would be dealt with firmly.
OPERATIONS across eThekwini resulted in the arrest of 357 drunk drivers over the past weekend.
Roadblocks involving Durban Metro Police Service, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and other stakeholders saw more than 100 arrests made from Friday, January 30 to Sunday, February 1.
On Saturday night (going into Sunday morning), Durban North SAPS along with the Durban North CPF were part of a roadblock that saw 45 drivers arrested for drunk driving in uMhlanga.

The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma also welcomed the operations, saying it was ‘firm and decisive’ actions against drunk driving.
“We pay tribute to Durban Metro and SAPS for working in partnership with RTI as part of cleaning up our road networks.”

Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, confirmed joint operations would continue and warned that all unroadworthy vehicles and law-breaking drivers will be dealt with firmly.
“It is very concerning that some drivers continue to ignore road traffic laws and drive carelessly, putting their own lives and the lives of other road users at risk. This negligent behaviour leads to serious injuries and deaths on our roads.
“Law enforcement agencies will not tolerate this behaviour. Drunk drivers, negligent drivers, and unroadworthy vehicles will be removed from the roads, and offenders will face the full consequences of the law,” he said.
