Suspect caught in Greenwood Park home ceiling

Officers discovered that the suspect had stripped copper piping from the roof while hiding from authorities.

A HOUSE break-in suspect’s attempt to evade arrest failed after security officers found him hiding in a ceiling of a home on Ben Nevis Road.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (February 11) just after 19:50.

Security officers from Marshall Security were alerted to the incident by a message on a WhatsApp Crime Alert Group reporting a house break-in in progress.

To effect the suspect’s detainment and hand-over to Greenwood Park SAPS, officers had to borrow a ladder from a neighbour to access the ceiling space.

“When our officers made contact with the homeowner he reported that a suspect had gained entry and was believed to be hiding on the roof of the residence,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.  “The residence had been vandalised, with various items stolen and sentimental belongings damaged.

“A hole was discovered in the roof above the toilet area, indicating where the suspect had caused damage. Entry had been gained via the trap door. He was found in possession of a bag containing broken cellphones, a knife, and a screwdriver,” he said.

Powell added that while hiding inside the ceiling, the suspect had stripped copper piping from the roof.
