Our Lady of Fatima hockey tourney brings the vibe

In what was the inaugural festival, a total of 11 schools from around the country played their games at the Riverside Sports Club.

THE atmosphere at the Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School Coastal Hockey Festival was electric this weekend.

In what was the inaugural festival, a total of 11 schools from around the country, including the hosts, played their games at the Riverside Sports Club and Northwood School.

For the Durban North School, their U14A, U16A and first team competed.

Adding to the atmosphere was the school’s Spirit Team which led learners in war cries while cheering on the Fatima teams.

Speaking to Northglen News, Matthew Smith, Head of High School Sports, said the tournament brought a good exposure of high-level hockey for all the teams involved.

“The festival was designed to mirror the intensity of top-tier tournaments, allowing athletes to experience high-pressure match situations while still early in the season. I also feel the tournament prioritised high performance and athlete development over mere results,” he explained.

“I felt the competition was both challenging and inspiring, and it created an environment where players were encouraged to push their limits and build confidence. Beyond the competition, the festival aimed to foster connection and sportsmanship among schools, celebrating a shared passion for the game while setting the tone for the season ahead.”

Smith added the hope is to expand the tournament from next year, growing it to involve netball and tennis.

He also thanked sponsors, partners and the community for their support throughout the festival.
