She will address the urgent issue of Gender-Based Violence in a lecture titled, “What Does It Reveal About the Erosion of Democratic and Human Values, and Our Commitment to Ubuntu?”
The event will be held at STADIO’s Musgrave Campus on April 1 from 13:00 to 15:00, and will be followed by a panel discussion and an interactive Q&A session with the audience.
Pillay, a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former judge of the International Criminal Court, has had a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the advancement of human rights and global justice.
A national survey by the Human Sciences Research Council revealed that 33.1% of South African women — more than seven million — have experienced physical violence. Nearly 10%, roughly two million women, have endured sexual assault. The South African Medical Research Council reports that seven women are killed every day, most often by intimate partners.
Within higher education, the picture is equally alarming: between 20% and 25% of female students report experiencing sexual violence each year.
Those unable to attend in person are invited to join the lecture online via the following link.
