40 more motorists arrested for drunk driving in Durban North

According to the KZN Department of Transport various excuses were given by drunk drivers including one who demanded a cell with a sea view.

FOLLOWING an operation targeting drunk drivers on Friday evening, law enforcement were once again out in force and arrested 40 motorists on Saturday evening (March 28) in Durban North.

This brings the number of motorists arrested for drunk driving across operations in uMhlanga and Durban North over the weekend to 67 (Friday: 27 arrests and Saturday: 40 arrests).

The roadblocks formed part of the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation and involved officers from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

Through the KZN Department of Transport social media page, images of those arrested on the evening as well as some of the excuses given were shared.

According to the Department, one of those arrested asked to be placed in holding cells with a sea view along uMhlanga beach while another intoxicated driver offered a bribe of between R500 to R1200 which was captured on a Facebook live video.

“We are overwhelmed by a positive feedback from the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the whole country,” said MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma on the operations.

All of the motorists arrested in the operations were taken to the Durban North police station on Norrie Avenue.

Durban North CPF public relations officer Darryl Oliver commended the officers involved in the operations.

“We commend the RTI officers for their professionalism, despite barrages of insults from both drivers, passengers and members of the public throughout the night,” he said.
