Rotary Club of Umhlanga begins Gran and Gramps prep
The event, now in its 11th year, takes place along the uMhlanga Promenade which starts and ends at Durban View Park.
IT is being billed as fun for seniors and that is certainly something the Gran and Gramps Walk organised and hosted by The Rotary Club of Umhlanga aims to do.
The event, now in its 11th year, takes place on Thursday, June 4 at 08:30, and involves a walk along the uMhlanga Promenade which starts and ends at Durban View Park.
Honorary Rotarian, Clive Hull, who has been involved in every event since inception, explained he has been blown away by the support of seniors across the area.

“I’ve walked some and been involved in the organisation of others but what has been special to see is the numbers of people joining us. In our inaugural event we had 168 walkers and last year we ended up with a little over 240. The goal is to get to 300 this year. This isn’t a race but is a special day of fostering friendship and enjoying a walk in nature for a good cause,” he said.
A share of the proceeds from the entry fees goes towards the Verulam Day and Frail Care Centre and those participating are also encouraged to bring toiletries with them on the day which are donated to the residents of the home.
Vanessa Champion, the convener of the Gran and Gramps Walk, shared her excitement for the event.
“This is my third year being involved and the excitement is building. It is always special seeing the faces of those who finish the walk. This isn’t a race but a lovely way to give back, soak up the tranquility of the uMhlanga promenade and as Clive touched on, forging friendships. We are also lucky to have 30 sponsored walkers from the Verulam Day and Frail Care Centre. We are also grateful to all our partners, sponsors and to the Umhlanga Women Achievers who have also pitched in to give back. Anyone can join us and I’ve already sent out messages to retirement villages and homes,” she said.

Champion added there will be champagne on the day for the walkers and that she is looking for a sponsor for orange juice.
She added that The Square Ridge Pharmacy will offer free glucose testing and blood pressure tests on the day.
