uMhlanga post office in the dark for two years

According to Alan Beesley, a member of parliament, having no electricity has impacted on residents in uMhlanga.

ELECTRICITY is set to be restored to the uMhlanga post office this month after it was discovered that the branch had been without electricity for approximately two years.

This came to light after a member of parliament for Action SA, Alan Beesley, took to his X (formerly Twitter) account where he laid bare the problems faced by the post office branch.

The post office on Lagoon Drive, next to the Oceans Mall, also has no internet access and only deals in cash due to it having no electricity.

“I was contacted by residents about the non-functioning post office so I decided to visit the branch undercover. I walked in and enquired about a mussel licence to fish and while they didn’t even have the forms available, there was no electricity, meaning they couldn’t help me. Even if they had the forms the only way they could help me is if I paid in cash. I feel sorry for the staff as this isn’t their fault at all. We cannot have a non-functioning post office that serves no one,” he said.

When Northglen News visited the branch last Friday, an employee said they have had no electricity for the last two years.

The South African Post Office (SAPO) has been placed under business rescue in July 2023 and this has placed strain on several branches, including the uMhlanga branch.

The SAPO is undergoing a major business rescue process overseen by appointed Business Rescue Practitioners (BRPs).

When contacted by Northglen News with the allegations made my Beesley, the response from the BRPs was that electricity would be restored this month.

“Payment will be made after which electricity is expected to be resumed this month,” said Joint BRP Anoosh Rooplal.
