Danville learner selected for Proteas mixed netball team

In August Amy Wolhuter will represent the South African U19 indoor mixed netball team in a Tri-Nations competition.

IT has been a milestone year for Danville Park Girls’ High School Grade 11 learner Amy Wolhuter.

The 16-year-old, who plays for her school’s netball first team, was recently named defender of the tournament at the National All Girls’ Festival in Cape Town. She was also named in the top 10 All Stars team at the festival.

Earlier this year she was selected for the KZN U17 outdoor netball team and in August she will represent the SA U19 indoor mixed netball team, her second SA call-up.

She will play in the Tri-Nations competition featuring trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand and Australia.

Speaking on her national call-up, Amy said she was excited about the prospect.

“I didn’t even know I was trialing for the mixed team until the day of it. I had made the SA indoor team in the U15 age group and some of my friends were at the same trials so I felt more at ease. It’s a huge honour to represent South Africa and it is a dream to wear the green and gold. When I made the U15 team in 2024 it really opened my eyes to a whole new world,” she said.

Coached by a Proteas legend in Precious Mthembu, Amy hopes to one day earn a call-up to the senior women’s team.

Amy added that she’s been playing netball for as long as she can remember.

“I practically grew up next to the netball field. My mother Sarita is a netball coach and she even coached me in Grade Seven. The sport has always been something I love and I hope to continue excelling in it,” she said.
