Esports event breaks barriers for disabled

The adaptive gaming event organised by Glen Hills resident David Williams was geared toward an all-inclusive feeling.

IN just a short space of time David Williams, through his initiative Konke Gamers, has broken barriers for the disabled.

The Glen Hills resident and multiple KZN Para Surfing champ, who was born without legs below his knees, began Konke Gamers, which is dedicated to improving the overall quality of life for people with disabilities through the power of video games.

Williams said the aim was to make gaming technology more accessible for people living with disabilities.

He took a massive step towards that over the weekend as they hosted the Konke Gamers Accessible Esports Tournament at the Tropicana Hotel in Durban.

The adaptive gaming event was geared toward an all-inclusive feeling with experienced gamers, first-time gamers and individuals who’ve never had the opportunity to game due to physical limitations.

There were also prizes on offer and he was joined by Jordan Kough, executive director of AbleGamers and the co-chair of Global Gaming Federation on Adapted Esports (GGFAE) from the US, who partnered with Williams.

“The event was a day full of inclusion and celebration of people with disabilities. We have had such amazing support from organisaitons coming through, like ICON Durban, Made for More and others. There have been a few tears shed just seeing this come together and unfold. It is just surreal and to have the support of AbleGamers, who brought us additional controlers and adapters to use, was amazing.
Williams also works on adapters and prototypes by creating 3-D custom, specialised equipment for disabled gamers, tailored to their needs.
