ONE person was arrested and handed over to Greenwood Park police after he allegedly stole a battery from a parked car on Sunday, September 20.

The suspect was identified using CCTV camera footage after he and a suspected accomplice were spotted walking down Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) just after 16:30.

“While conducting patrols, a response officer noticed two individuals carrying a vehicle battery. The officer stopped to question the individuals, at which point one suspect fled the scene, while the second suspect was immediately apprehended,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“When questioned, the apprehended suspect denied that the battery had been stolen. However, upon inspecting the battery, officers noticed markings linking it to a client situated along Chris Hani Road. We immediately contacted the client, who attended the scene and confirmed that a battery had been stolen from a vehicle parked on the premises.”

Powell added that CCTV footage was reviewed and showed the suspects allegedly jumping over the property’s boundary wall, breaking the bracket securing the battery, and removing it from the vehicle.

“The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Greenwood Park SAPS for further investigation and processing. Despite an extensive search, the second suspect managed to evade arrest,” he said.

This incident once again highlights the value of proactive patrols, combined with CCTV footage and community co-operation in identifying criminal activity and assisting SAPS in bringing suspects to justice.

This is the second arrest on Chris Hani Road in a little over two weeks – earlier two suspects were apprehended in a stolen vehicle.

A blue Chevrolet Sonic had been stolen from the KwaDabeka area.
