Nerd culture takes centre stage in Durban

There was plenty on offer for everyone in attendance at ICON Durban with tabletop gaming, creativity, roleplaying and cosplay.

DURBANITES turned out in their numbers this weekend for Durban’s premier geek culture convention, ICON.

The event took place at Westville Girls’ High School.

There was plenty on offer for everyone in attendance with tabletop gaming, creativity, roleplaying and cosplay.

Shelley Kirby, the director of ICON Durban, said she was blown away by the support.

“We were very happy with the turnout. There was a queue nearly around the block when we opened on Saturday and the halls and play tables were full all weekend. It was an amazing energy,” she said. Kirby also touched on why ICON is such a special event.

“For me it’s the community. Seeing people try new things and fall in love with a new hobby; first time cosplayers who spent hours on their outfits and had people asking them for photos.

“The Durban geek scene is considered small compared to Cape Town or JHB. But we have the biggest heart. And that was on full display. We haven’t done final math yet but it looks like we raised over 10K for our charities. That speaks volumes for an event like ours that’s seen as small,” she said.
