Six roads in Durban North earmarked for speed humps

In all, six roads in Ward 36 are set for speed calming measures which residents have said in the past are prone to accidents and high speed.

SEVERAL roads in Ward 36 are set to benefit from speed hump installation, with construction beginning this year.

Thames Place (Athlone), Anthony Road (Athlone), Lothian Road (Park Hill), Lancaster Grove (Park Hill), Buxton Road (Park Hill) as well as Chicks Drive and Buttery Road, (Park Hill) are among the road listed for speed calming measures.

The funding for the projects has been secured through the Community Infrastructure Projects (CIP), which funds repairs and construction based on councillor submissions.

“The CIP budget is an annual budget of R3m and is allocated to every single ward across eThekwini. It is a discretionary allocation and fund made available in which the councillor, in consultation with the community, recommends how the money should be spent. There are certain criteria and guidelines on what the funds can be spent on.

“I know there will be unhappiness that some roads residents were hoping to have speed calming measured on were not approved. It is important to understand that eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) has to approve the roads for speed calming before any service providers and the project managers can implement them, which means that problematic roads like Old Mill Way and Hoylake Drive were not given the go-ahead,” he said.

Earlier this year ward councillor Heinz de Boer encouraged residents to submit a list of roads within Ward 36 that need speed humps.

At the time he received 200 responses with 15 roads being listed as areas of concern.

“Every month I receive around 20 to 30 requests from residents asking for speed calming. It usually is the same roads because they are prone to accidents and high speed. The reason I asked residents to submit a list of roads is this past financial year, the City has installed speed humps on five roads secured by the Community Infrastructure Projects budget which funds repairs and construction based on ward councillor submissions,” he said.

The table below shows how many speed humps have been budgeted for per road.

Thames Place 4 speed humps
Anthony Road 10 speed humps
Lothian Road 7 speed humps
Lancaster Grove 7 speed humps
Buxton Road 4 speed humps
Chicks Drive and Buttery Road10 speed humps
