The former Durban resident has earned his provisional place to represent the country and compete in Tokyo.

RED Bull Surfer Jordy Smith has been announced as one of 18 athletes to qualify through the WSL Championship Tour (CT) for selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“Wow, dreams do come true. It’s been something I have thought about since I started surfing. Such an honor to be the first male to qualify and represent South Africa. I am so proud,” he said.

Smith, (31), who grew up in Durban, joined the elite tour in 2006 and has twice placed runner-up for the world title, with six CT wins under his belt.
