Municipal workers set to down tools again?

COMMUNITY members might have to brace themselves as the municipal workers plan to down tools yet again.
A meeting was held on Monday, March 2 at the council chambers and it is there that the workers were discussing when to take action as the matter regarding their 14th cheques has still not been settled.
According to the workers, a resolution was taken as a means to end the strike last year that they would be paid level three payments as of February this year.
The workers say that they then seized the strike and returned to their duties in hope that the money would be paid but this did not happen.
The workers said that they tried to confront the Municipal Manager but she refused to speak to them.
According to the municipal workers,neighbouring towns who had the same issue settled it with no hassle but the AbaQulusi Municipality has been ducking and diving about this matter since 2012.
It is alleged that the money for their 14th cheques was corruptly shared amongst those said to be in power within the municipality.
After attempts to come to an agreement seem to have failed, the workers said that they would be taking the matter to Provincial Government.
“If our needs are not met, we have no choice but to take to the streets again as this seems to be the only language they understand,” the workers said.
Complaints about the municipality being graded a level 4 and how this has made no changes to their payments were also amongst the major issues that were discussed on Monday.
The municipality was contacted to give comment regarding the matter but to no avail.
