Mayor, Afzul Rehman and the municipality, together with the members of the public made it their top priority to clean the streets of Newcastle, showing that everybody was responsible in the upkeep of our town.
” We are going to take this opportunity over the festive season and we are going to rejuvenate our CBD. We want to make sure that people want to come to the central business district; we don’t just want them to go to the malls,” said Cllr Rehman.
The CBD Clean-up Campaign aims to increase business and public confidence in the CBD area. It is the initial and immediate first intervention of the campaign, and is expected to run for the next six months.
“It is not the responsibility of the of the government to clean the streets; it is the responsibilty of each and every one of us,” Said Cllr Rehman.
The campaign also seeks to address some social concerns and service delivery issues identified by the municipality in certain parts of the CBD.
The campaign includes clean-up operations, addressing maintenance challenges such as potholes and the dilapidated informal economy infrastructure, bylaw enforcement, as well as an education drive to change and influence people’s attitudes and perceptions about the CBD.
