Tensions ran high in Sithembile last night when a large group of protestors converged on the home of ANC Councillor, Lungile Mbhele, demanding that she ‘get out’.
Police said the crowd descended on the Councillor’s home shortly after sunset. At one stage a threat was made to burn down her house.
Glencoe police were dispatched to the scene to ensure that there was no damage to property. The group, said by police to number about 80-100, chanted and sang demanding that Councillor Mbhele leave.
She won a by-election in November 2013 to win ward 3, which includes Sithembile, for the ANC. The results of that election were:
Bhekani Shabalala – National Freedom Party: 198.
Dudu Nkosi – Inkatha Freedom Party: 864.
Lungile Mbhele – African National Congress: 1 099.
Vincent Ntombela – Independent: 33.
In 2014. she was involved in a controversy when the community accused her of employing her ‘friends’ at a Transnet project in the area. The controversy boiled over into violence with wide spread unrest in the township.
