UPDATE: No response from municipality on illegal dumping

Illegal dumping continues to transform open areas across Newcastle into festering heaps of bottles, building rubble and general trash.

The municipality has failed to provide comment on illegal dumping.

Residents reported incidences of dumping in Barry Hertzog Park and Schuinshoogte last week.

A makeshift dumpsite has formed beneath the Drakensberg Street bridge – near the FW Beyers intersection.

Bottles, building rubble and general waste litter a wide area.

There is also evidence of vagrants taking up residence beneath the bridge.

This mimics similar problems in vacant off Coronation Road, Schuinshoogte.

Despite no response from the municipality, the Department of Waste Management did provide a response earlier this year.

Much of that feedback remains relevant to this matter.
