Business woman willing to offer gardening lessons

Cato has immense expertise when it comes to clivias and is willing to share her knowledge with the Vryheid community and surrounding areas.

If you are a flower / plant lover, you will know what clivias are… But then you have Cato Duke, who is an ‘expert’ when it comes to these flowers, as she has been growing them for the past 10 years.
Cato has immense expertise when it comes to clivias and is willing to share her knowledge with the Vryheid community and surrounding areas.
As the owner of Siesta B&B, she explains in-depth how she makes her own petal colours by using pollen and how she creates different names for the flowers. Cato mentions that she makes quality flowers and sells them in cities like Johannesburg and Durban, saying that one needs to have a passion for flowers in order to truly reap the benefits. It takes about six years for the flower to grow, if you give it the proper attention, says Cato.
She says that few people in Vryheid know about her flowers and she is willing to teach people how to ‘make’ their own. She can be contacted on 082 461 7860.
More information on clivias:
Clivia miniata is easily cultivated and very rewarding. Plant them in dappled shade, as clivias are sensitive to sunlight and will burn easily. The plants should be watered regularly during the summer months, which is their growing season. Watering can be reduced during winter and the plants will tolerate fairly long dry periods. Bush lilies are spectacular container subjects. They should be grown in a well-drained potting medium which has plenty of compost added. This will also ensure good aeration, which is another of their requirements. Clivias respond well to feeding in the summer months, either with slow-release fertiliser included in the potting mix or with a good liquid feed.
