Wacky Wednesday: Unusual ways people enjoy spicy chilli heat

Explore strange and surprising ways people enjoy chilli, from spicy desserts to extreme eating challenges.

If you thought adding a little chilli to your food was adventurous, think again. Around the world, people have taken their love for ‘hot food’ to bizarre levels. From chilli-infused drinks to fiery dares, here are some of the weirdest ways people enjoy this spicy sensation.

Desserts

In countries like Mexico, chilli is often added to chocolate, ice cream and fruit. Imagine biting into a sweet scoop of vanilla, only to get a spicy kick that makes your eyes water. Sweet and heat is a combination not for the faint of heart!

Online challenges

People eat ridiculously spicy foods on camera. From spicy noodles to whole peppers, these challenges often go viral for the hilarious – and sometimes painful – reactions they provoke.

Coffee

Some coffee lovers sprinkle chilli powder into their coffee for an extra jolt. The heat enhances the richness of the coffee while giving you an added ‘wake-up call’. Whether that sounds energising or alarming is up to you.

A plain snack

In parts of Asia, you’ll find people enjoying chilli with plain snacks – like dipping fruit in chilli salt or eating it alongside popcorn. It’s a mix of tangy, salty, spicy and sweet that somehow works.

Eating it raw

If that’s not extreme enough, how about eating chillies raw… Chilli-eating contests push participants to consume the hottest peppers on earth, like the infamous Carolina Reaper. Contestants often end up sweating, crying and sometimes even needing medical attention.
