For generations, adults have lamented the idea that there must be something wrong with the generation below them.
We talk about generation gaps and sliding morality, and breakdowns in communication between parents and children.
The ‘plight’ of young people as something separate from adults – like it has a life of its own – gets louder and louder. I would like to point out though that the genetic make-up and primary psychological instincts of a newborn child has not changed.
It’s also a good idea to remind parents and adults, that (bar genetics, which haven’t changed) children are largely a product of their environment.
Children start to think, feel, and say and do what they experience and see. It’s therefore more logical that we start to ask ourselves what is wrong with parents and adults today. As parents and adults we need to stop talking about children like they’re an independent ‘problem’, and start looking at what we are doing and saying that is creating this ‘problem’.
And if you don’t like the influence of TV and technology on your children – cut it out of your life. And if you don’t like some of their friends, instil values and motivation in your children that keep them away from those kinds of friends.
