Pick up your papers

The season has changed, and it's a good time to put that extra energy to good use.

What does it say about us as a community that we throw our papers on the floor for someone else to pick up?

It is sad that as a nation we have grown the idea that someone else is responsible for our well-being. Although this idea has roots within our difficult history and socioeconomic reality, it is concerning to see that as a nation of individuals we believe so little in our own ability to make a difference in our community and in our own lives.

Although government is responsible for various services (that taxpayers pay for), we need to start giving ourselves more credit as change-makers in our own lives and community. Start small, but start looking for ways that you can improve your own life and the lives of the community around you.

If you want cleaner streets and children playing on those streets, start picking up your own papers and giving back. We can’t keep (only) expecting (and getting angry) when government and other people don’t make our lives better for us.
