Vryheid Cricket Club – Gladiators go down fighting as Wasps seize victory
Trying to defend their low score, they put the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons taking regular wickets and ended up claiming 5 wickets before Wicket Wasps reached the target in the 12th over.
TWO Kennedy Cup 40 over matches were played on Sunday.
Wicket Wasps hosted the Gladiators on a lively pitch at Cecil Emmett. The Gladiators won the toss and chose to bat first. Connor High, with ball in hand, demolished the Gladiators’ top order, taking 5 wickets for 16 runs in his 4 overs, and the Gladiators were all out for 73 runs within 18 overs. Juan Booyens also chipped in with 2 wickets. The only batsman for Gladiators to get into double figures was Thulani Zondo making 18 runs.
The Gladiators didn’t go down without a fight. Good bowling came from Leon Zwane (3-1-15-2) and Andrew Vorster (3-0-16-2). Juan Booyens (25) and PJ du Toit (15 not out) were the top run scorers for the Wicket Wasps. Wicket Wasps won by 5 wickets.
In the other match played in Dumbe, Mr X were sent into bat by Dumbe and scored a massive 357/9 in their 40 overs, thanks to a brilliant 182 not out, off 111 balls by Jean Botha. He was ably assisted by Jaco van Wyk, who was the second best scorer with 46. Juan Freyer (8-1-58-6) and Anton Beneke (8-1-52-2) were the best bowlers for Dumbe.
Mr X backed up their outstanding batting display with equally brilliant bowling and bowled Dumbe out for 194 in 30 overs. The main wicket takers were Gavin Bosman (7-0-41-4) and Clifford Dougherty (8-0-37-2). Dumbe’s best batsmen were Ludwig Niebuhr (50) and Carlo Hambrock (49). Mr X won by 163 runs.
The final matches of the Kennedy Cup will happen on Sunday, when Gladiators will travel to Dumbe and Mr X will take on Wicket Wasps at Cecil Emmett starting at 10:30am.
