Protect your pets against recent thievery

PAWS explains more about measures that pet owners can take to protect their pets.

PAWS recently published information to warn dog owners of a rise in dog thefts. Attention Pet Owners: Be Aware of Rising Dog Thefts “It’s unfortunate, but there’s been a noticeable increase in dog thefts lately, especially during the day when many of us are at work,” PAWS stated. “It’s a worrying trend, and we want to make sure your furry companions stay safe.”

Please see the following tips on how to prevent dog theft.

– Keep your dog out of sight when you are not home. Front gardens are particularly vulnerable to thieves as they can lure your dog closer and grab it.

– Get your dog microchipped and make sure that the microchip information is up to date. Microchips for cats and dogs can be done at PAWS. Get your dog a collar with an identification tag on.

– Have your dog spayed and neutered. The main goal for stealing a dog is breeding so that the puppies can be sold. You can have sterilisation done at PAWS or any other veterinarian.

– Mix up your routine. Change the times you get home, walk your dog, or any other activity. Unpredictable routines will make you and your dog are a less likely target.

If you see someone carrying an unlikely dog in their arms, or if you suspect that your dog was stolen, phone PAWS at 071 681 9264. “It always helps to have the community as our eyes and ears,” PAWS stated.
