Police Operation Shanela Sees Over 1,000 Arrests in North West
Police in North West conducted Operation Shanela, resulting in over 1,000 arrests and significant crime prevention measures.

In a concerted effort to combat crime, police, along with various law enforcement agencies, have arrested 1,020 suspects during the latest phase of Operation Shanela. This operation, conducted from 14 to 20 October 2024 involved a series of extensive actions, totaling 5,416 interventions across the North West province.
The week-long initiative included 10 roadblocks, searches of 164 premises, and inspections of 94 licensed liquor establishments. Authorities also conducted checks on 41 second-hand dealers, 156 farms, and seven informal businesses to ensure compliance with labor laws. Additionally, 906 patrols and 231 stop-and-search actions were executed, resulting in the closure of nine unlicensed liquor outlets.
Arrests were made for a variety of offenses, including 17 for robbery, six for murder, six for rape, and significant numbers for assault, drug possession, and illegal firearms. Notably, 60 undocumented individuals were processed for immigration violations.
The operation yielded substantial seizures, including various drugs, eight firearms, 640 kg of copper, 309 rounds of ammunition, explosives, and multiple vehicles.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the collaborative efforts of all involved, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and community safety.
