Watch: Residents protest appointment of new principal at primary school

"The department wishes to inform parents of children attending Promosa Primary School that it is not possible to request a preferred candidate for the position of principal," said Mphata Molokwane, the departmental spokesperson in a statement.

Concerned parents and residents of Promosa took to the streets this morning in protest of the appointment of the new principal of Promosa primary.

A candidate was suggested by the school governing body (SGB), but the department chose to appoint a different candidate.

“The Circular (20/2024) in which the vacancy was advertised made it clear that affirmative action will guide the filling of the vacancy and the designated groups earmarked for the above were: Indians, Africans and Coloureds. However, the person not recommended but appointed is not from any of the above designated groups. The community is therefore unhappy over the appointment made and is of the view that its discrimination against the race of the recommended candidate and them. The District Director so far refuses to give reasons why he wanted not to appoint the recommended candidate. He refuses to be engaged and give reasons for his actions. The community has now resolved to enlist the intervention of the NW MEC of Education,” said the chairperson of the concerned parents and residents, John McDonel in a statement.

The protest will start from Casper’s Shop in Bloemtjie street and end at Promosa primary where a memorandum will handed over.

Local traffic officials are on hand to redulate the traffic.

“The department wishes to inform parents of children attending Promosa Primary School that it is not possible to request a preferred candidate for the position of principal,” said Mphata Molokwane, the departmental spokesperson in a statement.

According to Molokwane, the recruitment process for the principal is guided by established procedures according to the department’s policies.

“The individual recently appointed to this role has successfully completed all necessary recruitment processes. Removing the principal from the school could lead to concerns regarding fairness and equity. We encourage the community to work collaboratively with the newly appointed principal and support the ongoing teaching and learning. The department is committed to ensuring that children’s rights to education are upheld. Parents can be assured that the appointed principal is qualified and will guide the school in a positive direction,”  said Molokwane.
