Health inspector shuts down illegal business operations

Despite previous opportunities given to comply, the operation revealed that a significant number of tuck shops continue to operate unlawfully.

On April 10 in Ventersdorp and April 11 in Potchefstroom, the JB Marks Local Municipality By-Law Inspectorate conducted a two-day joint operation targeting illegal business operations.

Jeanette Tshite, municipal spokesperson, said the operation led to the closure of more than 12 tuck shops found to be operating without the required documentation, including business licenses, approved building plans, and essential safety equipment such as fire extinguishers.

“Health violations were also uncovered, with spoiled food items, improperly stored or repackaged meat, and much more that were confiscated to protect public health.”

Despite previous opportunities given to comply, the operation revealed that a significant number of tuck shops continue to operate unlawfully. Additionally, several undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during the operation, highlighting the broader issue of non-compliance within the informal trading sector.

Individuals who formed part of the joint operation included the Director for the Directorate Community Safety, Collen Pitso Mofokeng, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipal Health Inspectors, and members of SAPS.
