Motor theft on the rise: Keep your vehicle safe

No one wants to go through the pain and financial struggle of having their vehicle stolen.

With motor vehicle theft on the rise in the Potchefstroom area, it is of utmost importance to ensure your vehicle’s safety.

Leandro de Beer for Potchefstroom First Responders and manager of Cachet Park Improvement District, says the Toyota Hilux reigns as South Africa’s most hijacked/ stolen vehicle.

“It’s durability and demand in urban and rural areas make it a prime target. Criminals prize its high resale value, with 12,000 units stolen in 2024 in South Africa. Many Hilux’s end up in neighbouring countries,” de Beer said.

To prevent vehicle theft, always be vigilant and take proactive measures.

Key Prevention Tips:

Secure your vehicle:

Lock doors and windows, even when parked briefly, and remove valuables from sight.

Park in well-lit, populated areas, or consider a garage or carport when possible.

Use anti-theft devices:

Install an alarm system, immobilizer, and/or steering wheel lock.

Be aware of your surroundings:

Park in well-lit areas, consider using a garage or carport when available, and be mindful of your surroundings when parking, especially in unfamiliar areas.

Have your keys ready:

Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car, especially in areas where you feel unsafe.

Consider a car tracker:

A GPS tracking device can help locate your vehicle if it’s stolen.

Be cautious of your surroundings:

Avoid parking in dimly lit areas or areas with heavy foliage where thieves could hide.

Report any suspicious activity:

If you see anything suspicious, report it to the authorities.

If your vehicle is stolen:

Report the theft immediately to the SAPS.

Provide them with as much information as possible about your vehicle, including its make, model, color, and any unique features.

Provide documentation:

Submit documentation like a certified copy of your ID, vehicle registration, and a copy of the police report.

Assist with the investigation:

Provide any additional information that might help with the recovery of your vehicle, such as the vehicle’s mileage, dents, or distinct markers.
