Potchefstroom learner wins national filmmaking award for powerful documentary
Written, produced, and directed by Bone for her final Dramatic Arts practical examination.
Bone Storom-Nkele, a Grade 12 learner from The High School for Girls Potchefstroom, has made her mark on the national stage with her thought-provoking documentary Heartbreak: The Documentary.
Written, produced, and directed by Bone for her final Dramatic Arts practical examination, the film delves into an emotional question: Can heartbreak change your identity? Through heartfelt interviews with young women, Bone explored the transformative power of emotional pain — and the answers she uncovered surprised even her. Her remarkable work caught the attention of the judges at the prestigious Filmit Festival Competition, hosted by Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, where she was named Best Director among all high school filmmakers in South Africa.
Along with the national title, Bone received a cash prize and a mentorship at the SAE Creative Media Institute in Johannesburg.
“It’s truly unbelievable, especially considering the journey to getting here and finishing the film. I’m extremely grateful,” says Storom-Nkele.
Her Dramatic Arts teacher, Mrs. RossouwTaljaard, shared her pride, adding, “Even though the creation process was tough, it was all worth it. I hope Bone continues to use her exquisitely creative mind — perhaps as a professional filmmaker one day.”
Bone’s achievement stands as a shining example of passion, creativity, and perseverance, proving that even from the classroom, powerful stories can touch hearts and inspire change.
