With the increasing incidence of rape in Ikageng, the Ikageng SAPS have made tremendous progress in bringing some of the suspects to book and ensuring convictions.
The Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom says a 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 13-years imprisonment on two counts of rape of a 23-year-old woman at around 01:30 on 6 June 2010. The victim and her 26-year-old sister were on their way home after visiting one of the pubs in town, when six knife-wielding men apprehended them and robbed them of their cell phones and money. The women screamed for help but no one came to their rescue. Three of the men dragged her to and open veld and the other three took her sister to another deserted area.
The accused repeatedly raped the younger sister and the other was sexually and physically assaulted.
In another successful conviction, a 35-year-old man was sentenced to 18-years imprisonment for the statutory rape of his wife’s niece in Ext. 11.
According to Trom, a concerned resident told a social worker that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by the aunt’s husband at about 10:00 on 4 November 2014.
“The aunt’s husband did not want the girl to play with other kids. The doctor confirmed that the girl was 3 months pregnant at the time,” she said.
Two rapists, aged 27 years and 20 years respectively, each received 22-years in prison for raping a 33-year-old woman in Baipei on 31 July 2015.
She was on her way to her boyfriend’s place after going to a shebeen. While she was walking through a passage, two males approached her from behind and asked her to accompany her. When she refused, they started to assault her. During the attack, four other men suddenly appeared, took out knives and dragged her to the open veld near Ditaelong Primary School.
She managed to escape and hid under a nearby van. Unfortunately, two of them spotted her and dragged her out and to the open veld. They took turns raping her.
One of the suspects were arrested after she managed to recognise his voice.
Trom applauded the dedicated Ikageng SAPS members, Investigation Officers, and Potchefstroom FCS Unit who worked as a team to arrest the rape suspects.
