The Ikageng police have revealed that the suspect wanted for the rape of a 17-year-old girl near Mohadin stadium on 11 September was also responsible for the rape of his own sister earlier that morning.
Last week, the Herald reported that the teen was left bleeding and unconscious after being stabbed and raped.
According to Const. Kelebogile Trom, Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, it has since come to light that the sister’s neighbour was awoken by a woman crying on her doorstep in Ext. 7 at about 03:00 on Sunday morning.
She went outside and saw the 20-year-old victim wearing only a pink vest, alleging that her brother had raped her. ‘Then she burst into tears,’ said the neighbour.
The accused raped the 17-year-old at 18:30 that day. Before the incident, he asked his victim to accompany him to his girlfriend’s house to deliver a letter. He raped her at knifepoint and then he stabbed her in the buttocks and head until she fell unconscious.
The girl came around the following morning and found herself on the ground.
In the latest developments, Trom reports that the victim was hospitalised in the intensive care unit because of the severity of her injuries. It has also emerged that she was raped for being a lesbian.
According to Thabiso Mogapi wa Tsotetsi, chairperson of Action for Social Justice International (ASJI), she was also part of the LGBTI (lesbian women, gay men, bisexual, transgender and intersex) community.
‘We condemn the current and ongoing spate of rape of our lesbian sisters in the strongest possible terms. We call upon the government and the political leadership to take a stand and unite with our LGBTI sector in trying to put an end these merciless rapes and attacks,” he said.
