Eric McMillian is originally from the United States of America and has lived in South Africa for five years now.
He is happily married to Mimi McMillian and the couple has four amazing kids. He is a Native American (my Tribe is the Lumbee Indians).
‘My wife and I are missionaries. In 2011, a friendly connection persuaded us to move to South Africa to work with orphans.
‘In 2013, God led us to Potch to start ‘Not Forgotten’ with the focus of education, discipleship and development. We started by building a relationship with people in Ikageng. We began with a weekly Kids Club outreach teaching the children Bible stories and playing games.
‘We also helped with teacher training and management of the creche. We also started a sewing project to help empower the mothers of the creche,’ says Eric.
The Herald asked Eric 10 questions to get to know him better:
1. Tell us more about what you do for a living (what is it you do and what are the best and worst parts about it).
Worst parts: seeing hungry, abused, and hopeless children. Best: seeing God touch someone’s life and their hearts filled with faith, hope and love.
2. Where did you grow up and what did you want to become as a child?
I grew up in North Carolina and as a child, I wanted to fly planes and be an actor.
3. What is your favourite place in Potchefstroom to spend time?
At Toro! The best coffee in Potch.
4. Five people you would still like to meet and why?
Billy Graham, Brother Yun, John Bevere, Francis Chan and Bill Johnson. I would love to talk to them and learn all I can from them about what Jesus has taught them in life.
5. Who do you not want to get stuck in a lift with? (Name one person.)
Justin Bieber.
6. Your favourite place that you have travelled to or still want to travel to?
Hawaii. I lived there for six years and it truly is paradise.
7. What are your hobbies?
I love playing all sports (my favourite being basketball and American football) and running.
I love going to the movies
I love spending time with my family.
8. Five things you would never leave the house without?
Bible, clothes, phone, book, and a smile.
9. Your three favourite meals?
Italian, Korean and a good steak.
10. What is your favourite quote?
Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
