The Ikageng township has been plagued with burglaries and assaults in the streets, forcing members of the community to form groups and patrol the streets at night.
During some of the successes, patrollers from the community of Ext. 11 confiscated knives, pangas, slingshots, axes, sjamboks and pairs of scissors. Hardened criminals use all these items to harm the community.
According to the Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Const. Kelebogile Trom, these dangerous weapons were confiscated in patrols between January and February. ‘They handed the weapons in at the Ikageng SAPS for disposal,’ she said.

Despite the good intentions of the patrollers, there have been incidents in some areas in Ikageng where men found roaming the streets at night were whipped and beaten to a pulp.
Trom offered some advice to the patrollers. ‘We encourage community members to join the community policing forum (CPF) and become part of the neighbourhood watch. ‘They should stop taking the law into their own hands. We are all affected by crime and it will be constructive for them to work hand-in-hand with the police,’ she said. Trom also became a victim of crime when her car’s window was smashed and valuables and bank cards were stolen from her car.
