Chris Hattingh, MP and the constituency head in J.B. Marks says Romeo Matjila no longer has any connection with the Democratic Alliance as he has been suspended from the party.
‘While Matjila is making serious allegations about racism, he is the one who joined a party that explicitly excludes Indian people and white people. We also have many members who have reported incidents where Matjila has made gross racial statements – we as the DA will never be associated with racists,’ said Hattingh.
Matjila was subjected to internal disciplinary processes
He added that these allegations and a few others were under investigation and Matjila was subjected to internal disciplinary processes.
‘This is after we received various complaints from people from outside the DA about Matjila’s questionable transactions and dealings. It was a huge embarrassment to the DA as we put a high value on ethical conduct and honesty,’ he said.
We are the only party in South Africa that is true to the legacy of Madiba and his vision of a rainbow nation
‘His response is nothing but sour grapes and he is playing the race card in a lame attempt to conceal his conduct and behaviour that is not in line with the DA’s vision of freedom, fairness, opportunity and diversity. We are the only party in South Africa that is true to the legacy of Madiba and his vision of a rainbow nation, said Hattingh.
‘In line with our policy, our premium on ethics and the high standards we expect from public representatives, Matjila’s DA membership was consequently terminated.
‘The reputation of the DA and our internal conduct are of utmost importance as this indicates to voters that we are committed to good and honest governance.
This is a clear indication that we will not hesitate to act against individuals who do not wish to live up to our norms and our continued quest for freedom, fairness, opportunity and diversity,’ he concluded.
