As you travel down the Promosa road you are soon confronted by a dumping site that is quickly starting to fill the area.
“No matter where you go in Promosa, you will come across a dumping site. But I’m more dis- gusted that people choose to dump their waste in the middle of nowhere,” said Brenda Mphela, who has lived in Promosa for over six years.
Brenda, a domestic worker, says she and a few of her neighbours volunteer their time to clean the dumping site on the Promosa road, but it seems they are just wasting their time.
“It’s difficult not to get discouraged because we use our free time to help where we can,” she said.
Lerato Motaung, who often helps Brenda after work, says the residents should realise that it doesn’t help to complain about service delivery if they don’t help themselves.
“We create this filth our- selves, so why is it that people continue to complain but fail to maintain it when they get help,” she said.
The pair add that they have tried getting the municipality on board to no avail. “We have made numerous requests, asking the municipality to at least create fences around these areas so the people cannot litter, but we haven’t heard anything yet,” Lerato said.
The two say they only continue to do their part because they love their community. “Although it seems the work we do is in vain, it fulfils us every time we do our part,” Brenda said.
“We hope the municipality will eventually assist us,” Lerato added. The Herald asked the municipality for their comment but had not received anything by the time of going to print.
