WorldSkills International, formerly known as the International Vocation Training Organisation (IVTO), was founded in the 1940s and emerged from a desire to create new employment opportunities for young people in some of the economies that were devasted by the Second World War. The WorldSkills movement has become much more than just an international competition. The organisation is helping young people around the world change their lives through vocational skills.

Students from TVET Colleges participate in several competitons before a winner is announced. Firstly they compete in the specific college where they study. Thereafter the winners compete against the other two TVET colleges in the North West Province. Students then emerged as provincial winners from the North West Provincial competition that was held in November 2021 in Rustenburg. These winners then took part in the national competition that was held in Durban, from 6 – 10 June 2022. Vuselela TVET College is extremely proud of Gift Sereo and Katlego Popane, who won a Gold and a Bronze medal respectively at the National WorldSkills competition.

The Gold Medalist, Gift Sereo participated in the Skill Area: IT Networking. He will now represent South Africa at the 46th International WorldSkills competition which will be held from 12 – 17 October 2022 in Shanghai, China. Katlego Popane, the bronze medallist, participated in the Skill Area: Carpentry. Both students are based at Jouberton Campus and this was both their first time participating in National competitions. Students don’t take a completed project to the competition but have to build and complete a certain task/project at the competition itself.
