Inspired by the notion to keep Madiba’s legacy alive, the SANDF’s Tactical Intelligence Unit in J.B. Marks visited Witrand hospital to spend their 67 Minutes cleaning the hospital by cutting trees and removing rubble in honour of Mandela day on Monday, 18 July 2022.
Approximately 30 soldiers led by Major Joyce Msiza arrived at Witrand Hospital with salutations at 09:00 and were welcomed by hospital staff, management, and board members.
“The main purpose of the day was to make a difference in the lives of the patients as well as the staff by creating a safe and secure environment for them,” LT Morgan Snyman who spoke on behalf of the regiment, said.
The activities of the day started with handing over toys and toiletry hampers for admitted patients, culminating with the cutting of trees and cleaning the premises.
“This morning (Monday, 18 July) reminds us that there is no one like Nelson Mandela. Keeping South Africa united and maintained peace and harmony through his selflessness. As a diverse community in Witrand hospital, we strive for this ideal,” Nico Masiu, spokesperson of Witrand said.
The trimming of the trees is to enhance the therapeutic environment for clients and community members but most importantly for patients and staff’s safety and security. “We need our premises to be more visible and safe,” Masiu added.
“On behalf of our patients and staff, thank you sincerely, for this day, a touching moment for all of us at Witrand hospital,” Moipone Mpolokeng, CEO of Witrand Specialized Hospital acknowledged.
