Children’s home relaunched in town

Having recently relaunched a safe home for unwanted babies, Vessels of Mercy is here to accept abused and neglected children in cases of emergency.

Located at 32 Joubert Street, the safe house currently houses six children between the ages of one and 15. The director of the organisation, Susan Fouché, says although there are many cases of abused and neglected children, the children act only allows them to house six children at a time for a long period.
“We take the children in and provide them with efficient care and rehabilitation for approximately three months before they are either taken to foster care, a children’s home or back to their families,” Fouché explained.

Fouché added that the organisation comprises three projects, namely:

* Place of Safety – their biggest project, where children are taken in at a time and rehabilitated.
* An educational project where people interested in fostering are educated about different topics like the difference between fostering and adoption and are guided by professionals like social workers, etc.
* The baby safe project is a vault in a wall with an alarm. “This is for mothers who want to give up a baby. They have the option of placing the baby in the vault, and we will collect them,” Fouché explained.

At the moment, most of the organisation’s income is from individual contributions. Sadly, this isn’t enough, and the organisation is in dire need of funds. “Please contact us on 082 048 6309 if you are willing to donate. Even as little as R30 a month makes a big difference to us,” Fouché concluded.
