Potchefstroom gears up for NWU FC’s first match in the big leagues

The Eagles will be making their debut in the professional ranks of the Motsepe Foundation Championship against Upington City on Saturday at the Fanie du Toit Sport Grounds.

North West University Football Club will be making history on Saturday, August 22 as they will be lining up against Upington City at the Fanie du Toit sports ground at 15:00 in the second division of professional football in South Africa. This will be a monumental shift in the sporting history of the University as the Eagles will be making their debut in the professional ranks of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (formerly known as the National First Division). 

The NWU Eagles earned their spot in the Motsepe Foundation Championship after defeating Mkhambathi FC in the semi finals of the national playoffs in the Eastern Cape. The national first division will provide a stern test to the newly promoted NWU Eagles however as history would suggest, home support plays a key factor. The Eagles, based in Mahikeng, will temporarily play their home games at the NWU Fanie du Toit Sports ground in Potchefstroom. It is expected from supported from all three NWU campusesses will support the team this Saturday on an historic day.

Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, has encourages NWU FC to continue making history in this new exciting chapter.

NWU principal and Vice-Chancellor professor Bismark Tyobeka also recently unveiled the new NWU FC kit during a special launch held last week.

He challenged the players and technical team to build on the foundation that secured promotion and to embrace the greater demands of professional football.

“We have crossed from university and amateur competition into a professional league environment. That requires a corresponding shift in how we govern, manage and support this team. Professional football demands stronger governance, compliance, infrastructure, financial discipline and operational excellence.”

Prof Tyobeka also said that NWU FC’s promotion was the result of years of deliberate investment in student-athletes, discipline and belief in sporting potential.

The NWU Soccer Institute, established in 2007, has progressively created a pathway linking sporting talent with academic development and professional opportunity.

Over the past three years, 109 players have participated in the programme, with nine progressing into professional football. The programme’s achievements include Varsity Football championship success in 2019, ABC Motsepe provincial championship titles in 2022 and 2026, culminating in promotion to the National First Division.

Nkululeko Malgas is the head coach of NWU FC. He was recently crowned “Coach Of the Year” at the 2026 North West Sports Awards and captained by Aphelele Sibisi who is the reigning Sports Star of the year after a public vote.
