Die Wilge learners roll up their sleeves to fix water leak on school grounds

Under the supervision of mr. Brits and mr. Gert Maré,  Die WIlge learners fixed the leak in 30 minutes on Wednesday, 14 September.

Knowledge was put into practice this past week at Die Wilge High School when learners together with personnel took the opportunity to fix a water leak on the school grounds.

This water leak has caused thousands of litres of water to go to waste this passed year. The water shortage and lack of running water in the area, created a window of opportunity for the school to fix the problem themselves.

According to Mr. Michael Brits the school contacted the municipality several times to fix the leak, with no success.

“The school could not previously fix the water leak, due to safety reasons. The municipality should firstly turn off the water. The high water pressure could have caused a problem. We don’t want to injure our learners. We waited for the municipality to turn off the water, and fix the leak on our school grounds, but that did not happen,” he added.

Under the supervision of Mr. Brits and Mr. Gert Maré,  Die WIlge learners fixed the leak in 30 minutes on Wednesday, 14 September.

“We calculated that 200 litres of water was wasted per hour this year. The water ran down the street and into the storm water drains,” added Brits.

According to both Brits and Maré the fixing of the water leak is just another way for the learners to contribute to society and to take responsibility whilst helping others.

“Here at Die Wilge we teach these skills and this was a practical way for the learners to showcase what they have learned in order to help their community,” stated Maré.
