Local soccer player aims to play internationally

For Lesego Leeto, playing sports was something that always came naturally.

For Lesego Leeto, playing sports was something that always came naturally. Leeto, originally from Klerksdorp, has been active and involved in a variety of sports as a hobby since primary school. “ I always enjoyed being an active child in school,” he said. 

But even though the now 25-year-old thoroughly enjoyed keeping fit. Pursuing sport, professionally, had never come as a thought. Throughout his sporting career at school Leeto would always gravitate more towards soccer. “ I quickly became very passionate about it and often found myself prioritizing it over other sports,” he explained. 

However, even though his love for the sport grew, he saw it as just a hobby but he would notice people cheering from the sidelines. “ Everytime I played, people would always take note and mention that I was talented, even different coaches would encourage me,” Leeto said. 

Leeto continued to play for fun and only started taking the sport seriously once he got to high school. In 2012, he got promoted from the  NW LFA(4th Division) to SAB League(3rd 

Division) with Relay Soccer Academy, the following year he was named the Footballer of the year 2014 at Technical High School Klerksdorp. He went on to achieve many other things that led him to playing in Turkey in 2016. “ I played there for about 7 months and ended up coming back when I got injured and the team wasn’t doing as well as anticipated,” Leeto explained. 

Currently playing for the NW Signal Potchefstroom FC (NW ABC) 

Motsepe League) Leeto is hoping to get a full time contract that will eventually lead him to playing again, on an international level. Previously,Leeto has played for Stilfontein Real Hearts FC, Tigane United FC, Buya Msuthu FC (All NW ABC Motsepe League), Polokwane City

Leeto, who plays Left/Right wing, Left back encourages any aspiring local soccer players that although opportunities are limited in South Africa, they should keep their eyes on the prize and never give up. “ Your time will come,” he said.
