Photos: Mooibank residents concerned for their safety

"We are unfamiliar with the people who have come and demolished our homes. Our children have not eaten or drank anything for days. Our dogs are hungry. We can't just sit here."

Mooibank residents are fearful of moving to the Dassierand Road leading to Promosa due to numerous safety concerns. This after residents in Promosa blocked the Dassierand Road this morning in protest of the planned relocation of the Mooibank residents.

A Court order stipulates that the final day of eviction is today (Monday, 17 April). The planned relocation has already started from early this morning with numerous Mooibank residents having their shacks torn down.

Residents have stated that they are waiting for municipal officials to give feedback on the situation since this morning, but nothing has happened yet. A degree of uncertainty weighs heavy at this stage.

“We are unfamiliar with the people who have come and demolished our homes. Our children have not eaten or drank anything for days. Our dogs are hungry. We can’t just sit here,” stated one resident.

“We are worried it is almost 11:00 and we are now being prevented by the people of Promosa from getting to our allocated stands,” added another resident.

The situation is currently calm with SAPS and traffic police on the scene at the Mooibank Road.
