Potch Boys High matriculant chases down robbers
Motheo Boboko, a matriculant at Potchefstroom Boys High, showed bravery and quick reactions in a desperate situation when he and a neighbour went in search of the two robbers, ultimately finding them hiding behind trees in Kamp street.
What was supposed to be a routine walk back home from school, turned into a crazy afternoon for Motheo Boboko (18) when he was robbed of his bag and phone in Soetdoring street on Tuesday, 25 April.
Motheo, a matriculant at Potchefstroom Boys High, showed bravery and quick reactions in a desperate situation when he and a neighbour went in search of the two robbers, ultimately finding them hiding behind trees in Kamp street.
The two assailants jumped into a yard in Kamp Street when Motheo and his neighbour tried to apprehend them. They were eventually apprehended and arrested a short while later when Mooirivier Beskerming, SAPS and members of AfriForum arrived at the scene. Motheo’s backpack and phone was returned to him. He also was not harmed during the incident.
“It all started around 14:15 when I walked back home from school like I normally do.”
“I saw two men coming in my direction and I knew that they were planning to rob me. I just had that feeling. One of the men stuck his hand behind his back and asked me what time it was. It was then that they grabbed a hold of my hand and demanded to take everything I have,” remembers Motheo.
According to him he did not want to give them his phone or backpack, because all his school work was inside and he did not want to lose that.
“I had money in my bag and would rather give them that. They insisted that I give them my bag and phone. They pulled out big knives and threatened me. That’s when they tripped me and forcefully took my bag and ran away,” adds Motheo.
He then ran to a neighbour to get help. He climbed into the neighbour’s bakkie and drove with them in search of his attackers. On the way to Kamp street, he saw his bag lying on the side of the road.
“They hid behind the trees and after trying to apprehend them they got away and jumped into the yard. That’s when one of the neighbours in the street phoned Mooirivier Beskerming to alert them,” stated Motheo.
“I am just glad I wasn’t injured or anything. It could’ve turned out much worse. I was adamant to get my stuff back,” he added.
NW police spokesperson, Capt. Sam Tselanyane confirmed that the suspects, aged 16 and 20, are scheduled to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistates court on Friday, 28 April on a charge of common robbery.
“Investigation in the matter continues,” added Tselanyane.
