Former Ferdies learner receives prestigious law award
Herbst reflected on challenges that women in the legal world face, such as harassment, abuse, and the prevailing perception of female inferiority.
Shinique Herbst, a former matriculant of Ferdinand Postma High School (2019), received a Women-In-Law award a part of the 100 years of women in law celebration.
She is currently wrapping up her law degree at the Independent Institute of Education in Pretoria.
She was acknowledged as a Phenomenal Woman in Law through the ‘Celebrating 100 More Years of Women in Law Campaign’.
This award is a dream come true for Herbst. From an early age Herbst has been passionate about helping others, and decided to pursue a degree in law. In doing so, Herbst can advocate for those who are not aware of their rights, and help those who are.
This 23-year-old takes immense pride in belonging to a profession that continuously evolves and is inspired by her fellow extraordinary women who are working tirelessly to transform the legal field for the better.
Herbst spent her time at the Bosman & Bosman Attorneys law firm during the holidays where she equipped herself under the guidance of seasoned lawyer Frederik J. Van Tonder.

Herbst reflected on challenges that women in the legal world face, such as harassment, abuse, and the prevailing perception of female inferiority. Herbst would like to overcome these hurdles by emphasizing the importance of building a supportive network that offers guidance and assistance, aiming to resolve potential issues promptly and effectively.
Herbst has battled self-doubt, but her journey pursuing law at IIE Varsity taught her to trust her own instincts when facing challenges. She now firmly believes in her capacity to go the extra mile every day, inching closer to her goals.
Herbst hopes that girls and young women reading this will see her story as a sign that they should trust their instincts, and that they can accomplish anything if they put their mind to it and persevere through challenges.
Herbst plans on returning to Potchefstroom after finishing her degree.
Her aspiration is to extend her legal expertise to previous disadvantaged communities, ensuring that she becomes a reliable legal professional whom clients can depend on in their most challenging times, even when faced with financial and legal adversity.
