Video: Keagile Primary learners experience the power of music

The kids were really excited about the musical experience and getting an opportunity to participate and in turn grow a love for music.

The NWU School of Music Musikhane Community Music Engagement Programme is bringing the joy of music to learners at Keagile Primary School. The Musikhane programme was launched on Wednesday, 6 September at the school. This was in conjunction with Sport Is Life Movement NPC.

The Sport is Life Movement chairperson, Mandla Mbotho, is also a beneficiary of the Musikhane Community Music programme and decided to provide the same experience he had as a child.

“It will take them off the streets and from making bad decisions like joining gangs, abusing drugs, teenage pregnancy and crime. It will also be a way for them to express themselves musically and have fun and learn how to make music, be creative and who knows, we may produce the next Hugh Masikela or SA’s next big music group,” added Mbotho.

The kids were really excited about the musical experience and getting an opportunity to participate and in turn grow a love for music. According to dr. Janelize Morelli, a senior lecturer in Community Music at the NWU School of Music, this initiative saw a drumming workshop being initiated to great effect.

“The children were really receptive to it. Our community music students together with Prof. Albi Odendaal was also part of the workshop that will take place on a weekly basis till the end of the year,” stated Morelli.

The Musikhane project will also invest in the Keagile school choir and teach the basics of conduction and other facets of music to get the school choir to a level where they can compete against other schools. The Musikhane project was stated in 1994 when Bertha Spies, an associate professor in music theory at the NWU School of Music from 1993 until 2003, wanted to improve and enrich the lives from low socio-economic communities. |
