In a significant crackdown on crime, the North West Province has witnessed the successful execution of Operation Shanela, leading to the arrest of 1,168 suspects between 21 to 27 October 2024. This ongoing operation, aimed at enforcing the rule of law, focuses on reducing criminal activity in the region.
The suspects apprehended were involved in a wide range of offenses, including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and drug-related crimes. In addition, authorities targeted illegal liquor operations, resulting in the closure of 29 illicit liquor outlets, known as “shebeens”. Law enforcement officials conducted extensive searches, examining 94 premises, 2,424 individuals, and 817 vehicles during the week-long initiative.
Of particular note, 513 arrests were made through targeted operations conducted by detectives. Furthermore, immigration officials took 50 suspected undocumented individuals into custody for processing. Confiscations during the operation included substantial quantities of illegal goods, such as alcohol, drugs, counterfeit items, ammunition, and cellular phones, totaling a wide array of contraband.
The North West Provincial Commissioner has expressed satisfaction with the operation’s outcomes, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat rising criminality, particularly as the region prepares for the festive season. The phased approach of the Safer Festive Season Operations aims to address the increased movement of people and potential threats to public safety during this busy time of year.
