Silent Book Club Potchefstroom brings readers together
Come for the calm and stay for the quiet magic of reading together.
Book lovers in Potchefstroom are invited to slow down, unplug and rediscover the joy of reading together when Silent Book Club Potchefstroom hosts its February meet-up later this month.
The gathering, taking place at The Juke Box at 13:00 on February 21, offers something refreshingly different from traditional book clubs. No assigned reading, no pressure and no expectations, just shared quiet time among fellow readers.

Silent Book Club follows a simple but meaningful format. Members begin with about half an hour of socialising, giving attendees the chance to order food, chat and settle in. This is followed by one hour of silent reading, where participants immerse themselves in their chosen books while enjoying the calm presence of others. The session concludes with an optional half-hour discussion for those who would like to share what they are reading.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own books, whether physical copies, e-books or even audiobooks. Quiet crafts are also welcome, and an honesty library adds an extra layer of community spirit. Attendees can bring a book to share and take another in return.

The concept forms part of a global movement that has grown rapidly since its founding in 2012 in San Francisco by Guinevere de la Mare and Laura Gluhanich. What began as an “introvert’s happy hour”, a relaxed space where people could read together without the pressure of assigned titles or structured discussion, has since expanded into nearly 2 000 chapters across more than 55 countries, all run by volunteers.
Silent Book Club Potchefstroom meets once a month, with organisers intentionally rotating venues to explore unique local spaces and create new reading experiences.
Built around the idea of being “alone, together”, Silent Book Club appeals to introverts, busy professionals and anyone seeking a gentle form of self-care. In a fast-paced, screen-filled world, the meet-ups offer a rare opportunity to unplug, find calm and connect with others through a shared love of books.

All ages are welcome, and newcomers are encouraged to simply arrive, find a cosy spot and enjoy the bookish atmosphere.
Zandri Troskie-Naude, founder of the Potchefstroom chapter, says she first came across the idea on TikTok and initially planned to drive through to Pretoria to attend a Silent Book Club there.
“That’s when I decided I would rather just start one here. I went onto their website, registered and was approved,” she explains.
She recalls that their very first gathering, held in February last year at Mug & Bean on the Bult, attracted a total of eight people.
“The club has grown tremendously. At our last meeting we had 35 people, and the most we’ve ever had was 45,” she says.
The club celebrates its first anniversary this month and, to mark the occasion, organisers will be giving away a book. A lucky draw will take place at the end of the event, and entry is free, attendees simply need to be present.

Zandri adds that the club is not only for readers. Some participants come to work on art projects, enjoy colouring activities, or even spend the quiet time writing their own books.
Looking ahead, the club is planning a special event in April where local authors will be invited to attend and connect with the community.
