PAWS Haven appeals for urgent help as intake of animals surges
One day 16 cats were brought to the shelter in under an hour.
PAWS Haven has issued an urgent appeal for food and supplies after an unprecedented surge in abandoned and injured animals placed severe pressure on its resources over the past few weeks.
According to the organisation, 138 animals were brought into its care in less than a month. While some pets have since been reclaimed by their owners, many remain at the shelter awaiting permanent homes.
The situation reached a peak on one day when 16 cats were brought to the shelter in under an hour.
“These animals arrived trembling, frightened and desperate for love,” PAWS Haven said.
Among the cases that recently came through the shelter’s doors is Rosie, a dog that was left severely injured following a hit-and-run incident. In another case, a small dog was carried more than 7.5 km by a concerned resident in an effort to give the animal a chance at survival.
The organisation says the increase in animals needing care has placed immense strain on its already limited resources.
The situation was further complicated when the shelter’s bakkie, used for rescues and transporting animals, was temporarily out of service, making it more difficult for volunteers to respond to calls for help.
Despite the challenges, the shelter says its team remains committed to assisting every animal in need.
“From strays, to the abandoned, to the unwanted, every life matters,” PAWS Haven said.
Volunteers at the shelter say the emotional toll of the work can be overwhelming, but their focus remains on saving as many animals as possible.
“Every day we hold our heads high and our tears low, because every life we touch matters.”
PAWS Haven is now urgently appealing to the public for donations of dog and cat food, as well as other essential supplies. Community members are also encouraged to assist by fostering animals or volunteering their time.
The organisation thanked residents who continue to support its work.
“To everyone who stands with us, believes in us and helps us keep going, thank you for giving these animals a chance.”
